Starring William L. Petersen
Directed by Dennis Zacek
by David Harrower

William L. Petersen, returns to the theater where he first earned his Equity card to star in Blackbird. This searing two-person drama about the destructive cycle of desire and illicit love brings to mind Petersen’s earliest work on Chicago’s stages, playing morally questionable characters in In the Belly of the Beast, The Night of the Iguana, and Flyovers. “The most powerful drama of the season…masterly, mesmerizing…extraordinary…a miracle” (New York Times), and winner of the 2007 Laurence Olivier Award, Britain’s equivalent to the Tony’s, Blackbird will leave you stunned into silence.

When "CSI: Crime Scene Investgation" star William L. Petersen returns to the stage of the Victory Gardens Theatre this season, he will be starring in British playwright David Harrower's "Blackbird," a hit in London's West End during the 2006 season and the following year at New York's Manhattan Theater Club. Harrower's drama (not to be confused with Adam Rapp's play of the same name, performed here several seasons back by Profiles Theatre) is the story of the "reunion" between Ray, now 55, who 15 years earlier had a sexual relationship with Una, then a 12-year-old neighbor girl. Now, after he has served time in prison and she has endured years of ridicule, she has tracked him down. What transpires is bound to raise many questions. The production is set to run July 3-Aug. 9, 2009. Tickets: (773) 871-3000. Hedy Weiss, theater critic

The Victory Gardens is housed in the historic Biograph Theater, where infamous gangster John Dillinger met his demise. The outside of the Biograph was recently used for shooting of the Chicago gangster biopic Public Enemies, starring Johnny Depp and Christian Bale.

Victory Gardens blog - 2008

Of course, all my wife will care about is the Billy Petersen show. With this and Dublin Carol, this is more Billy Petersen in eight months than Chicago theater has gotten in two decades, I daresay! Maybe the fellow has tired of picking through dead bodies.
