'A brief lecture in Entomology'

Spiders are the only Arachnids that are equipped with
spinnerets at the hind end of the abdomen for silk production.

"Hello students. You may have heard that i am a bit of a dull speaker, that maybe so, but i hope you are not disappointed with the information you will gain from me today."
"Let's begin shall we"
Students start pulling notebooks & pens out of their bags, then shuffle about getting comfortable.
Clear my throat slightly......

"I am here today to give you all a glimpse into the exciting world of Entomology, and it's use in forensic science. There will be an opportunity..." Appreciatively eye the student with her hand held aloft. Yes, Miss...?."
Brown eyed, Brunette student on the front row "Sidle....Sara Sidle"
"Miss Sidle....As i was saying, there will be plenty of opportunities at the end of the lecture to answer any questions you may have regarding the information i will be giving you"
Sara Sidle puts her hand up high again seeking to eagerly ask a question.....
Sighing lightly, and making eye contact with her and feeling a little unbalanced "Yes Miss Sidle"

"Dr Grissom will your lecture be including some facts and information about forensic anthropology today"
"Yes. Now if we could proceed with the lecture" Arching a challenging eyebrow at her.
Miss Sidle smiles a gap toothed smile then looks down to her pen poised on her writing pad.

Heart gives a flutter, and speeds up.

"Entomology is the scientific study of insects. Insects are the dominant animal life form on earth. They make up more than 80 percent of all described animal species. Insects have a huge impact on our lives. They are a critical part of the ecosystems that support human life. We depend on pollinators and other beneficial insects for food production, natural pest control, and waste decomposition. But, insects also cause billions of dollars in yearly losses to crops, stored products, forests, and buildings. Insect pests affect millions of people worldwide with diseases, causing illness or even death.

Insects are an exciting and challenging field of study. A degree in Entomology is a gateway to a variety of careers that include teaching, research, pest control, many areas of state and federal government, the military and private industry."

"What does an Entomologist do i hear you ask?"
"Professional entomologists have careers in university teaching, research, Cooperative Extension, structural pest control (preventing damage to homes and other structures), industrial and institutional pest control (keeping insects out of your school and other public places), public health agencies, pest-management consulting, agricultural business, consulting for the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) or other law enforcement agencies, the Armed Forces medical corps, environmental monitoring services, quarantine and other regulatory agencies."

"Insects and related arthropods are diverse and abundant. They inhabit every conceivable habitat and are closely associated with human habitation. As a result, they provide invaluable forensic evidence if they are properly collected and identified."
"We will cover how to collect specimen samples and field data in a way that will be scientifically valuable and thus credible for use in court."

"I will be giving an overview of forensic entomology, insect identification, and collecting and rearing techniques in forensic investigations. Basic entomology is applied to forensic investigations, with emphasis on techniques for collecting and preserving maggots."

Dim the lights to start slide show of pictures and eyeball Miss Sidle again.
